In hanging chain models, when a weighted structure hangs upside down, the entire structure is perfectly balanced and all columns, arches, and ceilings are at their equilibrium positions and shapes; when weight is hung from the chain, it stretches into the perfect shape for that particular load; when the structure is flipped right-side-up, the direction of force changes from pulling to compression, but everything still points along the same direction, so equilibrium is maintained.
