There is a deeply rooted psychological tendency in a significant portion of humans (about a third) to value oneness and sameness in society, and in liberal societies where diversity is managed through tolerance rather than enforced uniformity, this produces intense psychological strain on authoritarians leading them to seek escape through exclusionary movements.
