Civil society exists in Russia more than Western observers recognize, and the repression is precisely because authorities fear its potential; this is why Alexei Navalny had to be imprisoned—he was bridging factional divides within the opposition and building a genuine national movement rather than a Moscow-based movement, which made him exceptionally dangerous to Putin.
