Conductors Need No Memorization Unlike Soloists

Suzuki always uses a score and never performs by heart because, unlike pianists or singers who must memorize, there is no reason for conductors to memorize; memorization diverts energy into avoiding mistakes and continually changes one's understanding, whereas the only task should be making sound, so keeping scores (as in sacred choral music) is better.
