Strategic power competition between US and China can coexist with areas of common ground that benefit both parties without requiring either side to surrender their competitive position.
Two giant pandas from China, Baili and Singal, both 3 years old, arrived at the Smithsonian National Zoo on Tuesday, nearly a year after the DC Zoo's panda exhibit was vacated.
The Chinese Embassy spokesman Leo Pangu stated that the panda arrivals are intended to 'inject fresh impetus into exchanges between China and the US and help to stabilize the broader bilateral relationship.'
The panda exchange follows a 20-year conservation relationship and begins a new 10-year residency agreement at the Smithsonian, with zoos paying up to $1.1 million per year per panda to help China preserve panda habitat.
