When simulations were modified to use thousands of payoff functions instead of one or two, some conditions emerged where truth-seeking organisms could be competitive; however, organisms that create data structures called 'objects' by clustering similar payoff functions outcompeted the truth-seekers, suggesting objects are evolutionary constructs for encoding fitness payoffs rather than perceptions of objective reality
