The default human condition is to feel like a separate self having an experience, and this identification with a sense of self is the root cause of psychological suffering and dissatisfaction that meditation can address by showing the constructed and non-foundational nature of that sense of self.
All humans exist simultaneously on multiple levels of consciousness: the physical ego level (with body and personality), the psychosocial identity level, the astral/archetypal level, and the soul/pure awareness level; most people identify exclusively with one or two levels and miss the richness of simultaneous multi-level awareness.
The journey of spiritual awakening begins in infancy when a human learns separateness and becomes 'somebody'—identifying exclusively with their physical body, thoughts, desires, and separate self. This 'somebody' training is necessary for functioning but creates suffering when taken as the whole truth.
Fear has its root cause in ignorance of one's true non-separate nature; as long as one identifies exclusively with the separate ego entity, fear will persist because that entity will cease to exist; extrication from exclusive identification with separateness provides access to a part of being that has nothing to fear.
