Tony Parsons and Jim Newman come from the Advaita Vedanta tradition, which teaches that liberation already is the case no matter what happens, and that the only illusion is believing you are the one doing watching, eating, or speaking when in fact there is just watching, eating, and speaking happening.
Dogen concludes Genjo Koan by saying that someone who believes we don't need to use a fan because air is ever-present, or that we feel air without using a fan, does not truly understand that the nature of air is ever-present—and therefore the authentic practice of Buddhism makes the earth manifest as gold and ripens the long river into curds and whey (meaning practice makes all things beautiful and functional).
