A banker (Mark Monroe) at City National Bank personally guaranteed a $100,000 loan to Whole Foods after the flood, even though the bank had rejected the loan; the bank's formal rejection meant Monroe's signature became the only collateral, which Mackey only learned about 10 years later.
When considering the acquisition of Mrs. Gucci (a California natural foods chain), Mackey's father objected that he was overextended, but Mackey recognized this was a once-in-a-generation opportunity that wouldn't come again; he proceeded with the acquisition and left the management largely independent.
Early natural food entrepreneurs (including Mackey, operators of Mrs. Gucci, Bread and Circus, Alfalfas, and Unicorn Village) viewed themselves as part of a common movement to change how America ate; they met three times yearly and helped each other, ultimately all selling to Whole Foods.
