the only thing that things this doesn't show is that flange seacock is required to be attached to the hull uh those holes you see should have bolts in them one way of complying with that is by using one of the backing plates that it's a composite fiberglass backing plate that is made to accommodate bolts for specific size through-hull and then after the bolts are put through the backing hit plate the backing plate is then bonded to the inside of the hull

that isn't the standard the 500 pound load test for seacocks so we actually did a test on that that we uh winched with a load cell and actually winched it building this out to test it so it you can test it it's fun uh but yes all those things have to have a 500 pound load test and mike i believe the background if you know i was that if you're falling stepping down there's a lot more weight than whatever your body weight could be that's going to be falling on it so i think that's one of the reasons it's 500 pounds and not just the normal human weight

once you drill a hole through the hull the two holes if you were to look at it dead on from the bow uh with the tube in place because of the flare of the bow and how the bow gets wider as it goes back you're going to have a flat spot facing dead forward the back of the tube is going to be facing dead ahead and exposed outside the flare of the bow on the forward edge of the tube so i've seen it done a couple of different ways uh the conventional fairly conventional way is to build a brow it's called a brow on the front side of the tube to deflect water past that flat spot which would be the back of the tube and i've also seen um where they have made cutouts uh a dished it's hard to explain it uh on the back side on the hall from the back side of the tube sort of recessing that area to get it to where the front of the tube is as far as width so that you don't have that you wouldn't have that hard deflection of water uh hitting off the back of the tube it has the ability to slide by as the boat moves forward

there's not a whole lot of regular maintenance it has to be done you should always you know periodically check make sure the hoses are decent make sure the hose clamps are okay um if it's a seacock or a through-hall the seacock does not get actuated much which many of them do not um in the spring in the fall maybe you're winterizing you're commissioning the boat uh moving back and forth a couple times uh you get those ones like uh like overboard discharges from heads that never get opened somebody wants to open it it's not gonna open um so exercising the refer to that is exercising a through-hole exercising the seacock sorry uh the through-hole is the piece that goes through the hole the seat is the valve so exercise the valve on a regular basis at least at least once a year that's that should do uh we'll do a lot to to keep the uh keep the valve operable when you want to be able to operate it

For an outboard that is trimmed up but the lowest tip remains submerged in the water, the best practice is to leave the outboard low enough so at least the lowest anode is in the water, then manage biofouling through periodic cleaning rather than risking corrosion from an unprotected submerged portion.

you know the big thing is to make sure it's coated if it's if it's properly coated problem is that's where 10 of the where um depending on the design of that of that lower unit but as long as it's properly coated and not just anti-fouling it's got to have a barrier code on it of some sort as long as that area is barrier coded basically isolating the metal from the water then you won't have any problem but yeah the issue happens is that you know the coating wears off it wears through you have exposed aluminum there you're going to have problems if that outboard doesn't come all the way out of the water you know the best thing to do would be to leave it all the way down uh so that the anodes are also in or leave it down enough so that at least the lowest anode is in the water you'd still have to deal with maybe cleaning a little fouling off of it now and then but it would protect the unit whatever part of it's still in the water right

we had a jig a rod jig made up where once you made your hole on either side uh where it's all been triangulated and you know you have a hole or a center spot at the same point on each side you drill a hole there slide the rod through and it had a jig attached to the rod that would scribe the circle uh on the side of the hull because you're not dealing with uh the shape of what you cut out is not actually round uh because you're you're dealing with an angled it's not all in the same plane it gets a circle uh but it's a circle across a diagonal so the jig would allow you to scribe essentially a circle but once you actually scribe the hole or scribe the lines it was not circular it's more egg shaped or oval depending on the flare of the bow

any special grounding rules for dual outboards uh there should be the only thing that i would really be aware of there should be some sort of bonding between the outboards themselves uh i am not an outsport expert yard that i worked in we did not deal with outboards a whole lot but it can eliminate some issues if there is some sort of bonding between the two outboards uh other than that you know they're whether they both are fed power from the same battery or two different batteries if it's two different batteries again the batteries uh the negatives of the battery should be connected together um so there's no difference in potential there or between the outboards themselves so uh that's one thing i could say about outboards

there's their their greatest friend in my practical experience i've had really no problems with them um they you know you've eliminated an underwater metal uh you don't have any any further corrosion issues there uh they're excellent for uh aluminum hauls and if you if you have to add a through-haul to an aluminum hall um and especially carbon fiber uh carbon fiber being graphite is electrically far more noble than just about any other material that you could put in there except for something that's inert like plastic without having to worry about insulating it somehow so carbon fiber halls is where you tend to see them the most um but uh no they are i've seen no longevity issues with them um they are and they are special plastic you cannot just use plastic fittings uh from the hardware store uh these are marlon they are fiber reinforced uh plastic that meets specific criteria and are allowable for use below the water line
