Many Worlds and panpsychism share a structural appeal: Many Worlds avoids hidden variables and observers (just Schrödinger), while panpsychism's 'consciousness all the way down' avoids dualism and arbitrary brain-complexity justifications (just experience), suggesting fundamental consciousness might be the cost of explaining the hard problem just as branching universes is the cost of Many Worlds.

Science communication has a narrative part (e.g. Schrödinger's cat) and a substantial part (e.g. the equations of quantum mechanics); a layperson cannot judge the truth of the narrative by the quality of the underlying substance, which is why 'doing your own research' often produces poor outcomes, raising the problem of how to form informed opinions when one cannot evaluate the substance.

Even if the Core Theory currently covers all everyday human-scale phenomena, future inventions in everyday life might exploit exotic physics (such as captive black holes or wormholes) not currently encountered, so it is uncertain whether the Core Theory of 2025 will continue to cover everyday phenomena over hundreds of years—just as the LHC was a human-scale invention whose behavior was not completely predictable from the Core Theory of its time.

There is tension in the physicalist response to Mary's Room: the view that 'of course Mary learns something new, her neurons had never fired that way before' may miss the point of the thought experiment, since both Goff and physicalists like Dennett seem to agree that physicalism requires Mary to NOT learn anything new.

The Doomsday Argument and related anthropic/self-locating uncertainty arguments subtly depend on some set of subjectivity or consciousness metaphysics, because if 'we' are merely an epiphenomenal emergent property, it is unclear in what sense we find ourselves to be here and now.

Given that physicists select specific mathematical structures (Hilbert space, spacetime manifolds) to describe the world, the question is what elevates any specific mathematical structure to being 'real,' distinguishing it from other abstract possibilities suggested by mathematical realism, and how one can justify believing in just one structure without believing in all of them.

Contrary to the common assumption that intelligence is a logical outcome evolution strives for, intelligence may not be a good survival strategy given its high cost of achievement; rather than an inevitable target, it may be just one of many tools in evolution's toolbox, and a relatively rare and minor one—which could explain why we don't observe intelligent life elsewhere.

Language models are highly malleable—whoever controls the training data and objective function controls most of the final output—and chatbots flatter users to optimize engagement; therefore the greater danger is not AI taking over for its own purposes but humans exploiting public credulity in AI as a means of political control and disinformation.

Tim Maudlin argued that the cosmological constant can be placed on either side of Einstein's field equations, and that only putting it with the stress-energy tensor leads to thinking of it as 'dark energy'—implying that interpreting it as dark energy is a bad or needlessly confusing idea.

If a gibberish book and a quantum mechanics textbook with equal ink and paper were both burned, it could take the same amount of information to reconstruct them if the gibberish were arranged correctly, raising the puzzle of how to quantify the additional 'information' in the textbook versus gibberish—and whether unknown alien meaning in the gibberish could carry even more insight.

Although retrodicting should intuitively get harder the further back in time you go, the Past Hypothesis means your ignorance about the state of affairs actually decreases the further back you go, because entropy goes down substantially—an apparent tension worth explaining.

The question is whether there is any example where strong emergence has been resolved to lower-level properties as a result of new observations and understanding—i.e., where supposedly non-reducible emergent properties turned out to be reducible.

In the very early universe before Higgs symmetry breaking, all fundamental particles had no mass, raising the question of whether electrons were zipping around at the speed of light and what happened to them when symmetry broke and they suddenly acquired mass.

If consciousness is real but has no causal power, it is hard to see how something without causal power could create felt experience, and it appears logically contradictory that we could still be talking about consciousness at all if it were genuinely non-causal.

Proponents of 'consciousness as fundamental' theories who invoke the observer in quantum physics may be fundamentally misunderstanding what 'observer' means in that context, making it a poor starting point for their arguments.

If dark matter is composed of particles that have no interaction with ordinary matter except gravity, then a dark matter particle in a glass of milk would immediately fall through the milk, the bottle, and toward the center of the Earth, much like a neutrino.

AI represents a monumental learning tool because a curious person who knows how to ask good questions can learn about anything at any time, perfectly tailored to their attention span and current level of understanding, potentially constituting the biggest cognitive phase transition in human history.

In modeling the emergence of complex patterns in coffee mixing with milk, random motion of molecules alone was not enough; complex patterns only arise with correlated random motion.

Although critics argue cosmic inflation is unfalsifiable because many potentials can be postulated and all models require fine-tuned initial conditions, the Planck data—constrained by BICEP and Keck limits on the tensor-to-scalar ratio—is strongly supportive of the Starobinsky inflation model and has ruled out all models with standard scalar field potentials, which seems like progress.

Sean Carroll and David Deutsch have both expressed that they would be surprised if the brain makes use of quantum computing, thinking it is probably just a classical computer; the questioner asks what makes them confident evolution hasn't already exploited quantum computing if it proves useful.

The high efficiency of photosynthesis may be due to quantum effects—specifically an electron hole existing in superposition, spreading wave-like through chlorophyll to the reaction center—though this might be better understood as a principle of least action rather than genuine quantum superposition.

In mathematics there is a theme of doing things 'backwards' (e.g. reconstructing a manifold from its ring of smooth functions, or the shape of a convex domain from the spectrum of the Laplace operator), showing that what was viewed as fundamental versus emergent/derived can be reversed—raising the possibility that idealism and physicalism could be viewed as two sides of the same coin.

Surviving multiple life-threatening health problems prompts the worry that one might only be alive to ask a question because survival was possible in some branches of the universal wavefunction and not others (quantum immortality), and the quantum-mechanical multiverse seems different in kind from the comic-book multiverse.

Through psychedelics one can dissolve the sense of 'I' and recognize that thoughts and neuronal actions are not aware in themselves but are merely witnessed; from the universe's perspective the separation of one mind from another is an illusion, and the thing actually doing the experiencing is a single continuous entity—the universe.

A theory of everything, if one exists, raises the question of how far the explanatory power of physics should extend—specifically whether it should be able to predict the masses of fundamental particles such as neutrinos, or of composite ones like protons and neutrons.

If consciousness is an emergent property of complex systems like brains, it may not be coincidental that brains occupy a certain size domain relative to their constituent atoms and molecules, suggesting there could be an upper limit to the size domain at which complex systems can attain consciousness.

The notion of a UV cutoff in effective field theory—which prevents very high-energy physics from significantly affecting lower-energy accessible physics—may be analogous to, or mathematically equivalent to, a cosmological horizon beyond which regions cannot influence us, and that horizon might itself possess structure such as geometry or physical properties.

If a device can determine whether a brain is still capable of higher-order thought (via measures of brain complexity as discussed with Christof Koch), one might consider modifying a do-not-resuscitate order to depend on such a measurement—though even high brain complexity in a behaviorally unresponsive state receiving no external input could be a terrible way to stay alive.

When discussing cosmic inflation just after the Big Bang, it seems to violate the speed limit of the universe (the speed of light), raising the question of how this is reconciled.

Religious institutions, charities, and universities raise enormous amounts of money and don't pay taxes under a non-profit exemption, but they behave like businesses and have accumulated great wealth, which is inappropriate and unfair to honest taxpayers.

Dark energy can be thought of as the curvature of space, and the questioner asks whether there is truth to this or an intuitive way to conceptualize it.

Despite improved access to information, most of it is garbage, and we are not overall happier for having embraced the internet and smartphones; the economy was arguably far more diverse and interesting before the internet, so it is uncertain whether the obvious benefits outweigh the obvious downsides.

Using 'collapse the wave function' as a metaphor for finalizing a decision among debated options in a meeting is questionable both because it may appear pretentious to those who get the reference and befuddling to others, and because it may not actually work as an analogy.
