Blame Targets Correctable Lapses; Otherwise Be Stoic
Blame is appropriate only where there was an identifiable, correctable alternative within the agent's power (e.g., 'you took your eye off the ball'); when a failure is genuinely inscrutable with nothing to learn, the right attitude—both toward oneself and others—is a Stoic one of not adding self-recrimination to the already-bad outcome.
Time Order Defines Causation, Not Vice Versa
It is part of the definition of a cause that it precedes its effect, so we should use an antecedently understood notion of temporal order (earlier and later) to define causation; attempts to reverse this—using an independent grip on causation to define time order—put the cart before the horse and make no sense.
Bell's Three Options For Quantum Mechanics
John Bell showed that resolving the measurement problem leaves exactly three coherent options: (1) the wave function is not everything—add extra variables like particle positions (pilot-wave/Bohmian mechanics); (2) the wave function is not always right—it sometimes objectively collapses (GRW/objective-collapse, Penrose); or (3) keep only Schrodinger evolution with nothing besides the wave function, which forces the many-worlds branching picture.
Primitivism About Laws Of Nature
Laws of nature (like F=ma or the law of gravity) are acceptable as primitive facts that are not reducible to or explainable by anything else, yet do the work of explaining everything else; every account of the world must stop somewhere, and laws are a natural, non-spooky stopping point in terms of which possibility, counterfactuals, chance and probability can all be analyzed.
Time Perception Is A Neural Construct Distinct From Time
The subjective feel of time is a complex neurological construct (the present moment is a confection born of working memory and a period of cortical integration that solves the binding problem), and this perception of time should be sharply distinguished from physical time itself, which is independent of perception—stars formed and galaxies took time to form when no one was perceiving anything.
Consciousness Is The Only Genuine Emergence Mystery
Pianos, stock markets and computers don't ontologically emerge as anything genuinely new—they are just complex configurations of atoms whose behavior is in principle predictable. The only genuinely perplexing emergent phenomenon is consciousness: nothing in the conceptual repertoire of physics would let you predict that any physical behavior should have an associated subjective feel, and we lack not just the answer but any idea of what a solution would look like.
Mathematics Is Platonic And Independent Of Physics
Mathematical entities exist independently of the physical realm (platonism): even if the physical world were finite or nonexistent, it would still be true that 1+1=2 and that there are infinitely many integers—unlike stock markets and pianos, which cannot exist without some physical substrate.
All Explanation Does Not Reduce To Physics
While a system's ontology may supervene entirely on physics (e.g., a computer is nothing but configured atoms), explanation and scientific understanding do not all reduce to physics: higher-level categories (computational, biological, economic) provide genuine insight a complete physical calculation cannot, and these disciplines are actually broader because their explanations would survive even radical changes in fundamental physics.
Block Universe Is Compatible With Passing Time
The 'block universe' label misleads: the four-dimensional spacetime is not a static frozen object sitting in time—rather, time is in it. Endorsing that past, present and future are all equally real does not entail denying that time has a direction or passes; one can accept the first while completely rejecting the (independent) claim that there is no fundamental direction of time.
Relativity Denies Global Simultaneity But Not Time's Direction
Relativity replaces Newton's universal global simultaneity (a stack of cosmic instants) with an objective light-cone structure: events in your future light cone are objectively later, events in your past cone objectively earlier, and space-like-separated events have no definite temporal order—yet none of this removes the fundamental directedness of time.
Dinosaurs Are Actual But Not Presently Actual
Past entities like dinosaurs are real and actual in a way fictional entities like unicorns are not, even though they are not presently actual—the words 'real' and 'actual' have no restricting content (a 'real actual dog' is just a dog), and the apparent disagreement between presentism and eternalism often dissolves into a disambiguation of whether 'actual' means 'presently existing'.
Physics Has Never Removed Time's Direction
Physics has never suggested time lacks a direction: the CPT theorem combined with experimentally confirmed CP violation (parity violation won Nobel prizes) implies T-symmetry must also be violated, so even the best theory (quantum field theory) contains a directionality of time; entropy-based asymmetries presuppose a time order rather than establishing one.
What-If Questions Are Tractable Math Games
Even counterfactual or counter-logical 'what if' questions are tractable because they are rule-governed language games: asking what the world would be like under an inverse-cube gravity law is just a different math problem, and even asking what you could do if you could trisect an angle with straightedge and compass (a provable impossibility) is answerable by treating it as adding a trisecting instrument.
Counterfactuals Are Made True By Laws, Not Possibilities
Counterfactual claims (e.g., 'if I had let go of the rock it would have fallen') are made true not by ghostly unactualized events but by the actual laws of nature: possibilities do not exert pressure on actuality because only actual things push things around; the laws determine which counterfactuals are true, so possibility is grounded in laws rather than laws in possibility.
Block Universe Is A Logical Triviality On Indeterminism
The block universe is compatible with genuine indeterminism: one can hold there is exactly one real past, present and future (a logical triviality) while also holding the future does not yet exist, is not yet determined, and that the laws of physics could let it come out different ways—so the block-universe view does not by itself undermine talk of unactualized possibilities.
Modal Realism Is Unmotivated And Insane
David Lewis's modal realism—positing an uncountable infinity of concrete, spatiotemporally disconnected possible worlds where everything imaginable happens—is the least parsimonious view available; its only motivation is the philosophical utility of defining other concepts in its terms, which is not a good reason to believe such worlds exist.
Compatibilism: Freedom Is Acting On Deliberated Preference
Free will is real and compatible with determinism: following Locke and Hume, 'free will' is a misnomer—it is the person, not the will, that is free or unfree. To act freely is to deliberate among options, choose on the basis of one's own preferences, and be capable of executing that choice; the alleged conflict between physical determinism and free will is an illusion because they address different topics.
Many Worlds Faces A Probability Problem
Many-worlds struggles to recover quantum probabilities: if a measurement with a 25%/75% predicted split yields both outcomes 100% of the time across branches, it is unclear what the numbers 25 and 75 mean; simple branch-counting fails (proponents reject it because it gives the wrong numbers), so they must supply some other account connecting branch structure to probability.
Consciousness-Collapse Is Wigner, Not Bohr
The Copenhagen interpretation does not actually attribute wave-function collapse to consciousness; that view was proposed much later by Eugene Wigner and is believed by almost no one. Bohr and Heisenberg tied collapse to measurement and a microscopic/macroscopic distinction, explicitly denying any role for consciousness—and von Neumann's formalism is what forced the wave function to evolve in two incompatible ways.
Many Worlds Branches Are Causally Connected, Unlike Lewis's
Many-worlds branches differ from Lewis's possible worlds because they are all spatiotemporally connected, growing from the same trunk and capable of physically interfering with one another, whereas Lewis's worlds are spatiotemporally disconnected; moreover branching is not a sharp physical event but a vague, threshold-dependent matter tied to decoherence.
