There is existential risk around the environment, maybe not just climate change, but maybe there's all sorts of other dimensions where there's some argument we have one planet and you wanna be a little bit careful and not mess it up totally.”
The 1950s-60s optimistic science fiction like Star Trek envisioned flying cars, supersonic aviation, cures for diseases, representing a dramatic contrast with the world of atoms where progress has slowed, even as the world of bits (computers) has accelerated.
“Jensen's Star Trek, the sort of optimistic science fiction of the 50s and 60s where, yeah, we'd have flying cars, you'd have supersonic aviation everywhere, all sorts of cures for diseases. And yes, there was an incredible amount of progress in this world of bits, much less in the world of atoms. I always think a lot of what we do is embedded in this physical world of atoms. And so when that slows, that's definitely felt as quite stagnant.”
After the Cold War ended, reasonable expectations existed: Russia should have become democratic with free markets; the Middle East should have achieved at least rudimentary peace; China should have followed the South Korea/Taiwan pattern of economic growth leading to democratic liberalization. Instead, Putin invades Ukraine, Middle East remains chaotic, and China has become more authoritarian—all contradicting the expected post-1989 trajectory
“Russia was supposed to work, there was democracy and free markets. And instead, we have this crazy man, Putin invading Ukraine. By now there should have been at least some kind of rudimentary peace in the Mid East. Perhaps the most striking contradiction of what we expect was that by now, China was supposed to be democratic. It was supposed to follow the pattern of South Korea and Taiwan, where first you have economic growth, and economic growth creates expectations, including expectations of freedom, free speech, and so forth. And these countries become democratic. China was supposed to follow that path, things are not going the way they were supposed to.”
The Thucydides trap—when a rising power confronts an established power, war results—is presented as a timeless, eternal pattern, exemplified by Athens vs. Sparta, or Wilhelmine Germany vs. Britain, or contemporary China vs. the US. So it's efficient, but it's this hyper specialization. And there's probably been an analog to that on the university side.”

“the project in many dimensions feels very exhausted. Even though of course, people still genuflect science, they believe in science with a capital S, but the ambition has been really beaten out. If you look at the individual scientists, it's much less of this sort of heroic, bold figure, breaks with dogmas and thinks for him or herself. And it's much more in late modernity, you're just a robot in a ever smaller cog, in an ever bigger machine or something like this.”
The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis worked out positively despite Kennedy being 'on amphetamines' while directly confronting Khrushchev, but betting on such high-stakes personal dynamics working favorably repeatedly in a nuclear world would be catastrophically risky.
“If you had a JFK as president on amphetamines going mano a mano with Khrushchev, it worked. In 1962, would it have worked every time?”
The real critique of Fauci is not that lockdown protocols were wrong if bioweapon threat was real, but that he infantilized the population by refusing to communicate the actual threat that terrified him, leaving people unable to understand the logic of interventions.
“the real critique is that, you weren't supposed to infantilize our population and not talk about it. And that's what he was scared about, and he was so scared about it, he couldn't even talk about it.”
Autonomous AI weapon systems are logically incentivized because human operators in the loop create vulnerability through electromagnetic jamming, so there is an internal military logic that drives autonomy even without conscious evil intent, creating a dynamic that increases first-strike temptation.
“It could just be this autonomous weapon system on a drone where we want to make them autonomous, because if you have a human in the loop, the human gets jammed. So there's a logic to a lot of these things. And then there are aspects that become more first strike type weapons.”

History is not Groundhog Day (eternal recurrence) but directional toward an endpoint, which means understanding the present moment requires attending to unique, world-historical circumstances rather than applying timeless patterns.
“History doesn't happen over and over again, this cyclical aspect, the eternal recurrence. Then in some fundamental way, the meaninglessness of it, history is going someplace, and if it's going someplace, that means there will be an end point.”
Classical Greco-Roman history as exemplified by Thucydides treats human affairs as cyclical and timeless—the rising power versus existing power dynamic repeats eternally with no essential change, making individual speeches and particular contexts irrelevant to understanding the fundamental pattern.
“if you contrast it with, let's say, a Greco-Roman understanding of history. Thucydides, Herodotus, Thucydides writes the account of the Peloponnesian wars between Athens and Sparta. Critiques of Fauci and COVID lockdowns, masks, and vaccines are legitimate on their surface as overreaction to a flu-like illness, but become coherent and justified if COVID was a bioweapon—the interventions would be appropriate responses to engineered biological danger.
“A lot of my conservative friends are very critical of Fauci and all the lockdowns and the masks and the social distancing and the vaccine that didn't really work. And on the surface level, these critiques are, I think, quite legitimate. It was not the correct protocol for some kind of flu. It was, however, roughly, the right protocol if you thought it was a bioweapon. If you think it's a very dangerous, humanly engineered bioweapon, those are roughly all the kinds of things that you might do.”
Science and technology have functioned as a trap that humanity was building for itself: there are apocalyptic risks, and going very slowly may have been better than racing toward Armageddon. This explains why progress slowed—not primarily as regulatory or educational failure, but as unconscious civilizational braking
“the overarching explanation that I've come to think is a very important one is just this idea that, in some way, science and technology were this trap that humanity was building for itself. That there were these apocalyptic risks and maybe going very slow was better than racing towards Armageddon.”
The Napoleonic Wars were quite violent, World War I significantly worse but still localized to regions rather than the whole planet, but nuclear and especially thermonuclear weapons released something that could destroy the entire world through building thousands of them in the 1960s and 1970s.
“The Napoleonic wars are quite violent. World War I is significantly worse, but it's still somehow localized, it's not the whole planet. And then there is something that gets released with nuclear weapons and maybe even more with thermonuclear weapons. And then you end up building not dozens but thousands and thousands of them in the 60s and 70s.”
Fear of technology has become pervasive, causing society to be leery of technological progress and no longer embracing it in the way it once did, contributing to the broader deceleration of progress.
“Tech got scary. We're leery of it now, we're not embracing it in the way that we used to.”
Retreat from society and political engagement, while personally sanctifying, is ethically irresponsible for addressing civilization-scale problems because it effectively 'hits the accelerator' toward Antichrist and Armageddon, following the Lord Acton principle that all evil requires is good people doing nothing.
“My political, social intuition is that it's the height of your responsibility because that is just, in effect, hitting the accelerator towards the Antichrist, Armageddon.”
After the Cold War ended, there was an expectation that democratic governance and free markets would spread globally (the 'end of history' thesis), but instead we see Putin invading Ukraine, Middle Eastern instability persisting, and most strikingly, China failing to democratize despite economic growth—contradicting the prediction that economic growth generates demand for democracy.
“This isn't the way things were supposed to be when the Cold War ended, right? Russia was supposed to work, there was democracy and free markets. And instead, we have this crazy man, Putin invading Ukraine. By now there should have been at least some kind of rudimentary peace in the Mid East. Perhaps the most striking contradiction of what we expect was that by now, China was supposed to be democratic. Autonomous weapon systems have internal logic driving their development: human operators in the loop get jammed, so there's systemic pressure to make them fully autonomous, creating a first-strike weapons dynamic that intersects with US-China arms race dynamics in unpredictable ways
“It could just be this autonomous weapon system on a drone where we want to make them autonomous, because if you have a human in the loop, the human gets jammed. So. There's a logic to a lot of these things. And then there are aspects that become more first strike type weapons. And there's some kind of crazy arms race between the US and communist China.”
There has been a narrow cone of progress in computers, the Internet, and artificial intelligence, but if technology means producing more with less, economic measures should show dramatic progress—they don't. Millennials are not dramatically better off than their boomer parents, indicating broad-based technological stagnation
“There has been a narrow cone of progress around computers, the Internet, and maybe now artificial intelligence. But if tech means producing more with less, then we should be seeing dramatic economic progress, we don't. The millennials are not dramatically better off than their boomer parents.”
Multiple explanations compete for why technological progress has slowed: libertarian explanations cite overregulation by agencies like the FDA; educational explanations point to failures in teacher training and STEM education; critiques of liberalism argue schools aren't functioning; Cowen's 'low-hanging fruit' hypothesis suggests easy discoveries have been exhausted
“As a libertarian, I always like to say it's too regulated and the FDA regulates the drugs too much. And if you regulated drugs, if you regulated video games like the FDA regulates drugs, we'd still all just be playing Pong. And so there's a libertarian anti-regulatory thing. There is a argument that the schools aren't teaching people and they're not teaching people to be scientists. Some of the educational institutions are broken. There's sort of an anti-liberal argument...There is a Tyler Cowen argument that somehow, the low-hanging fruit was picked.”
The Catholic Church in its liturgy and homilies made much of the end times and warned people to prepare for judgment, but after 1945 the church decided to go easier on these themes because people needed comfort more than exhortation about the end times.
“Rene used to observe that the church the Catholic Church in its liturgy and in homilies used to make quite a lot of the end times and warn people to prepare for judgment and so forth. Up until 1945 when the church seems to have decided to go easier on that because people needed comfort more than exhortation about the end times.”
Universities are poorly equipped to address large-scale questions about the meaning and end of history because they have fragmented into hyper-specialized disciplines where no single scholar can integrate knowledge across domains, and because an extreme rationalism inherent in modern academic culture rules out questions of death, sin, redemption, and ultimate meaning.
“the university was supposed to represent some kind of integration of knowledge across a lot of disciplines where they all would fit together. There are ideological reasons, but maybe there also are practical reasons where the amount of knowledge became too great for any single person to master. And then you had ever division into ever narrower sub disciplines.”
Even if the rate of scientific progress has remained constant over the past 100 years, the average PhD is 99% less productive than scientists 100 years ago because there are approximately 100 times as many PhDs today, indicating a deeply unhealthy scientific ecosystem where human capital is being wasted.
“One way to quantify this, even if we say the rate of progress in broad fields is the same as it was 100 years ago, not that it's slowed. But even if we say it's the same, if you think of PhDs, there are probably 100 times as many PhDs today as there were in, say, 1924. And so it's the same rate of progress. And the average PhD is 99% less productive than people were 100 years ago. And that doesn't seem like a very healthy scientific ecosystem.”
The promise of Christianity is physical resurrection, and science offered a competing way to achieve the same goal, serving as a potential rival to Christianity by accomplishing through science what Christianity promised through theology.
“It was perhaps downstream from Christianity, if the promise of Christianity is a physical resurrection, then science could offer that too. It was a possibility, maybe it was a rival to Christianity. You don't need Christianity if we can do it through science.”
The modern world from the Renaissance onward has been characterized by ever-progressing scientific and technological development, and this progression has an apocalyptic dimension because technologies like nuclear weapons and bioweapons can now actually destroy the world on scales previously thought impossible
“The modern world from maybe Renaissance onward has been this world of ever progressing scientific and technological development. And there is this very profound sense that there are things that change. There are dimensions of technology, military technology, communications technology, where things are not timeless and eternal...there certainly are dimensions of the technology that have become extremely powerful in the last century or two that have an apocalyptic dimension.”
Martin Rees, in his 2003 book 'Our Final Century,' argues that multiple existential risks including nuclear war, bioweapons, engineered pathogens, and environmental disaster mean the odds are no better than fifty-fifty that humanity will survive to the end of the present century.
“Sir Martin Rees in his 2003 book Our Final Century... The nuclear threat will be overshadowed by others that could be as destructive and far less controllable. Advanced technology will offer new instruments for creating terror and devastation. Instant universal communications will amplify their societal impact... I think the odds are no better than fifty-fifty that we will survive to the end of the present century.”
AI represents a significant development on par with the Internet in the late 1990s in terms of technological inflection points, with applications that can be either beneficial or dangerous, making it difficult to weigh the risks and benefits.
“I think it's on par, let's say, in the computer world, I think it's on par with the Internet in the late 90s. And then there are so many different ways it can be applied that are good and that are dangerous that it's hard to know how to quite wait them all out.”
Contemporary polarization and geopolitical failures have created a sense of free-floating dread in American society—a subjective but widespread feeling that things are not going as expected and something is wrong, even if this anxiety cannot be precisely articulated.
“Our own sense of polarization in this country, that this country somehow, and there's just a lot of feeling of, it's subjective. It's very difficult to get at, but it feels to me as though there's a lot of free floating dread.”
Thiel credits effective altruists with winning the debate about AI safety, arguing that there are dangerous corner cases and unknown failure modes that justify caution, rather than proceeding with transhumanist assumptions that AI will become godlike intelligence.
“If I had to score the Silicon Valley debate, I'm not on the Luddite side. I always try to be more on the protect side. But if I had to score it as a debate, I do believe the effective altruists are winning the argument. And the argument is something like, there are a lot of dangerous corner cases with this technology and we should be really careful, we don't quite know how it's gonna work.
