Cells communicate their organismal identity to each other via exosomes and extracellular vesicles (tiny packets of information exchanged between cells), which carry signals that maintain organismal integrity; when this communication breaks down, cells become rogue and may become cancerous.
By 1992, Noble's research identified 55 proteins involved in heart rhythm generation, but blocking the one known to contribute 80% of the electric current caused only a 10% change in heart rate, demonstrating that association (80%) is distinct from causation (10%), a pattern repeated in 90% of genomic associations.
Living cells repair DNA errors using approximately seven cut-and-paste enzymes that travel along the DNA molecule, locate errors, remove incorrect nucleotides, and insert correct ones; the cell does not allow division until all errors are corrected, but the mechanism by which the cell knows replication is complete is unknown.
