The Sahel—a belt of semi-arid scrubland running 1,000+ miles from the Red Sea to the Atlantic, 200-300 miles wide, including Sudan, Chad, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—is one of the world's most unstable and harshest regions, with endemic coups, very little rainfall, and difficulty growing crops that create chronic instability.
